Graduate news: Graduates Turn to Canberra for Future Graduate Careers

Canberra is showing strong potential as a career destination for Australian University graduates according to new data released by careers website GradConnection.
From a national sample of 16,000 University graduates and students, a career in Government is the third most popular job choice across Australia, attracting 10.1% of those polled. More popular than a career in Government as a choice for grads are Accountancy (no. 1) and Engineering and Mining (no. 2).

Students vote accounting number one

Accounting is the top career choice for Australian university students and graduates, according to a GradConnection survey.

GradConnection analysed their database of 16,000 students and graduates who ranked industry sectors by favorability, with 13.6 per cent favouring accounting.

A further breakdown of the data showed 36.7 per cent of graduates are interested in financial accounting, 34.6 per cent are interested in tax, 30.2 per cent are interested in external audit, 29.4 per cent are interested in internal audit and 27 per cent are interested in management roles.

Business Analysis & Project Management: The Top Two Choices in IT Graduates careers

University graduates rank business analysis and project management as the two most popular jobs in the IT industry, according to new data from GradConnection, the website where companies can interact with university students and graduates about employment opportunities.
From preferences offered by 16,000 university students, the GradConnection data shows a total of 9.6% of graduates are seeking careers in IT, placing the sector as the fifth most favoured industry behind Accounting (13.6%), Engineering/Mining (11.2%), Government (10.1%) and sales/marketing (9.9%). The GradConnection data covers graduate input across 15 Australian industry sectors.

Despite the current economic difficulties, accountancy is Australia’s most popular career choice among university students and graduates according to data from GradConnection, the website where companies can interact with university graduates about employment opportunities.
From a sample size of 16,000 students/graduates at Australian universities, 13.6% are favouring accounting as their top career choice, in front of Engineering/Mining (11.2%), Government (10.1%) and Sales/Marketing (9.9%).

Marketing industry falls short for graduates

Despite marketing and sales being the fourth most popular career choice for Australian university graduates, the industry is well behind other major sectors in efforts to attract graduate talent, according to recruitment website GradConnection.com.au.

Dan Purchas, co-director of GradConnection, indicated that the company’s data shows that among the 15 most popular careers listed by uni graduates, the marketing and sales sector appears among the least prepared with a lack of programs to attract and retain graduate talent.

What the next generation of graduates wants

A survey of graduates by GradConnection released on 15 July 2009 has important information for Australian companies and provides some optimism for the OHS profession and regulators.

A dominant element of modern employment is work/life balance. In some disciplines this is taken as workplace flexibility. In terms of workplace safety, work/life balance is a euphemism for psychosocial hazards of stress, bullying, fatigue, and workload amongst others. From this position, the survey findings showed that, when asked “What are the most important extra benefits?”, work/life balance scored the most support at almost 39%.

Monash Uni 2009 Graduate Careers Fair

I ventured down to Monash Uni for their Graduate Career Fair earlier this week to visit various clients and reviewed their efforts on Employer Branding. Besides the plethora of uni students, free pens and lollies, not much has changed.

It felt like Groundhog Day with the same Government departments/agencies, professional services firms and major employers all vying for the student attention.

Promotional items featured heavily with pens, slap bands, stickers, lollies, stress balls, books, pamphlets, t-shirts, tote bags being handed out.
